Javier Navarrete is a Spanish composer recognized for his work in both European and Hollywood cinema. He is best known for his score for Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score and a Grammy nomination for Best Score Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture.
Born in Spain, Navarrete studied under Chilean composer Gabriel Brncic in Barcelona. During this time, he became involved in avant-garde performances and electronic music research. His first feature film score was for In a Glass Cage, a psychological horror film that gained cult status.
Navarrete went on to work on a range of international and U.S. projects. In the United States, he scored the fantasy action film Wrath of the Titans (Warner Bros.) directed by Jonathan Liebesman, Inkheart (Warner Bros.) directed by Ian Sofley, and won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Composition for his work on the HBO film Hemingway & Gellhorn, directed by Philip Kaufman.
He continued collaborating with European directors on films such as Mirrors directed by Alexandre Aja, Cracks (IFC) directed by Jordan Scott and Byzantium (IFC) directed by Neil Jordan. He also composed the score for the Chinese fantasy film Zhongkui: Snow Girl the Dark Crystal (Warner Bros.) directed by Peter Pau.
Navarrete also composed the score for Antlers (Searchlight Pictures), a supernatural horror film directed by Scott Cooper and produced by Guillermo del Toro; Mr. Harrigan’s Phone (Blumhouse/ Netflix) an original film based on a short story by Stephen King and produced by Ryan Murphy and Jason Blum; and Sound of Freedom (2521 Entertainment) directed by Alejandro Monteverde, which became a box office blockbuster grossing over $250 million worldwide.
Navarrete is currently based in Southern California and continues to work on U.S. and international films.
